Most beautiful work of design seen in a long time. Studio Besau-Marguerre developed these copper mirrors “Iridescent Copper“. The text by Nana Tiedtke explains it all much better then I can ever write it down.
I totally adore the red, orange shining metal with the minimalistic geometric pattern.
( and the fun is I talked to the Hamburg based designers a couple of years ago about their first inovation which I have seen in Berlin. and now they are doing great and there products are getting better and better! Well done)
Mirrors are as ancient as our human need to adorn ourselves. The first mirrors in human history were originally made from polished
metals, particularly copper. These archaic origins inspired the Hamburg design duo Studio Besau-Marguerre to create the object “Iridescent Copper” for stilwerk limited edition design gallery. “Iridescent Copper” reawakens the ancient form of the mirror to new beauty. The captivating design of the mirror explores all the possibilities offered by the natural dis-colouration process undergone by copper. Copper reacts when exposed to heat and oxidizing gases such as oxygen, causing shimmering, iridescent colours to spread over the surface of the metal. Soft annealing,
a type of heat treatment, has long been used in traditional manu-facturing processes; however, the colours naturally produced in this process, known as ‚temper colours‘, are usually considered to be a flaw.
For Studio Besau-Marguerre, these glossy colours represented an exceptional kind of beauty. The designers developed a form of heat treatment that enabled them to
control the colours. the ambient air and the heat at specific points, creating colours ranging from pale straw to pink or pale blue depending on the temperature and duration of the heat source and the amount of air. The process produces the lustrous, iridescent rainbow of colours that lends such a sensuous texture to the polished copper surface. Each colour reveals something of the process that created it; each piece of copper tells its own story , and no two pieces are alike.
“Iridescent Copper” is a design object that is both a mirror and a wall shelf; the flat, two-dimensional nature of the circle is disrupted by the right-angled fold in its lower
section, adding a further practical function as well as dramatically reshaping the object‘s overall proportions. “Iridescent Copper” embraces its environment, incorporating its surroundings in the shimmering palette of colours while replicating them in its warmly reflective surface.
